Texas Primary Reading Inventory

What is the TPRI?

       The TPRI is a early reading assessment designed to identify the reading development of students in kindergarten through third grade. 



How is it administered? 

        Students are administered the assessment three times a year (beginning, middle, and end). It is also a one-on-one assessment with the teacher and the student. 

 

The students are assessed in these areas:

  • Book and Print Awareness- the ability to recognize parts of a book, that written words have meaning.

  • Phonemic Awareness- the ability to focus on and manipulate individual sounds. 

  • Graphonemic Awareness and Word Reading- the ability to understand that written words have patterns of letters that represent the sounds of spoken words. 

  • Reading Accuracy- the abilitiy to read words correctly.

  • Reading Fluency- the ability to read words quickly and correctly.

  • Listening Comprehension- the ability to listen to a story and retell it correctly.

  • Reading Comprehension- the ability to read a story and retell it correctly.
